Everybody wants white teeth and to get rid of the stains and discoloration. There are a few myths related to teeth whitening that you should not believe.

1. You can whiten restorative dental work.

Crowns, veneers, and fillings, are made of inorganic materials, which do not respond to teeth whitening.

2. It is possible to remove stains through oil pulling.

People think edible oil such as coconut oil can remove teeth stains. This is not true. They just provide certain health benefits.

3. Teeth whitening is only for people who do not have sensitive teeth.

The dentist will use desensitizing gel or rubber gum guards during teeth whitening treatment, so it is possible to get teeth whitening done even if you have sensitive teeth.

4. It is possible to whiten teeth using acidic fruits.

Naturally, acidic ingredients can cause damage to your tooth enamel. This is not ideal for teeth whitening.

5. You can harm your enamel with teeth whitening products.

The dentist uses a safe and effective whitening gel that will not harm your enamel.

6. Teeth whitening will give you a perfect smile.

The results of teeth whitening treatments depend from person to person. Not everybody will achieve the same results.

  7. Professional teeth whitening removes all tooth stains.

Some types of discoloration and stains cannot be removed from teeth whitening, also such as discoloration due to aging.

8. Over-the-counter teeth whitening is comparable to professional whitening.

You can use over-the-counter teeth whitening products such strips, toothpaste if you want to DIY your own teeth whitening. However, these are not as effective as professional teeth whitening.

9. Teeth whitening lasts forever.

Teeth whitening is not permanent. It usually lasts for about three years but will differ from person to person. The time it last will decrease if you drink coffee, tea, or smoke.

10. It’s safe to whiten teeth with UV light.

UV rays are harmful not only to your teeth but also to other tissues such as lips, gums, and eyes. This will not help with teeth whitening.
